 About the EEF

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) is an independent grant-making charity dedicated to breaking the link between family income and educational achievement, ensuring that children from all backgrounds can fulfil their potential and make the most of their talents.

We aim to:

  • raise the attainment of 3-18-year-olds, particularly those facing disadvantage;
  • develop their essential life skills; and
  • prepare young people for the world of work and further study. 

We support teachers and senior leaders by providing free, independent and evidence-based resources, designed to improve practice and boost learning.

We do this by generating evidence of what works to improve teaching and learning, funding rigorous trials of promising but untested programmes and approaches.

We then support schools, early years and post-16 settings across the country in scaling evidence to achieve the maximum possible benefit for young people.

The EEF has used a number of methods to disseminate its evidence to schools and scale-up the adoption of promising evidence-based practice and programmes. As well as publishing and disseminating its resources (such as the Teaching and Learning Toolkit, guidance reports and evaluations of individual EEF-funded projects), the EEF has adopted more active approaches – including regional campaigns based around guidance reports; promoting evidence through the Research Schools Network; and incentivising schools to adopt effective programmes through Excellence Funds.

As part of the next phase of its scale-up work, the EEF is developing a new approach to support schools. It combines readily actionable guidance and associated resources, CPD and training, and proven programmes, through a brokered approach aimed at supporting schools to improve outcomes for disadvantaged pupils.

The Content Specialist role is designed to further develop national and regional engagement with EEF content, such as our guidance reports, whilst leading on the production of high-quality tools and resources to support teachers and school leaders. The Content Specialist role coordinates a strategic approach to support schools in their area of specialism, such as coordinating communications; supporting research schools in subject specific training; building capacity; and generating strong partners in their specialism regionally and nationally.

The role

We are recruiting for four specialist positions, covering:

  • Literacy/English,
  • Numeracy/Maths,
  • Science
  • Learning Behaviours (behaviour, self-regulation and metacognition). 

These specialisms span EEF’s scope of interest: children aged 2-16 years, though we recognise that applicants will likely have more experience and expertise in a specific phase of schooling. We ask applicants to specify which specialism/s they wish to be considered for, and the phase in which they have most experience. Successful applicants will be expected to develop their skills and knowledge over time to work across all phases to support the work of Research Schools, including SEND contexts.

The role will be home based with some national travel and regular visits to the London office of the EEF.


The Content Specialist will act as a content expert, helping drive the use and engagement of the EEF’s evidence in their specific area of classroom practice by developing tools and resources, related to EEF Guidance Reports, to support teachers. Specifically, they will do this by:

  • Updating and developing relevant EEF Guidance Reports
  • Coordinating the development of relevant resources and tools related to the guidance reports
  • Supporting the development of training programmes based on Guidance Reports
  • Gathering feedback from teachers and schools (including through Research Schools) to improve how the EEF and the Research School network can maximise the awareness of and engagement with evidence
  • Coordinate subject specific campaigns on topic areas. Campaigns will aim to ensure that the EEF’s evidence and resources are reaching schools, in particular to support the most disadvantaged pupils  

Main responsibilities

Developing tools & resources:

  • To translate and exemplify research evidence, and related EEF resources, such as guidance reports, in their area of specialism.
  • To support the editing and updating of existing EEF guidance reports in their area of specialism, whilst playing an important role in ensuring new guidance reports are well received in the school system.
  • To develop tools, resources and guidance reports, based on their area of specialism.
  • Act as the main point of contact for the EEF for practitioners and partners seeking information regarding their area of specialism, signposting to evidence-based resources, interventions and appropriate people.
  • To take a lead role on Guidance Report panels related to their specialism. 

Coordinating campaigns:

  • Work closely with the National Content Manager to develop and monitor a coordinated campaign based on their area of specialism.
  • Build and maintain a strong network of contacts with research bodies, delivery partners, system leaders, key influencers, headteachers, classroom teachers, and others, in their area of specialism.
  • Identify and build relationships with other potential delivery partners to enhance capacity.
  • Develop the knowledge and understanding of the Research Schools as EEF’s key delivery partners.
  • Work closely with the Research Schools to ensure that there is sufficient capacity for delivering training and follow on support in their area of specialism.
  • Monitor and quality assure the implementation of CPD and training from all delivery partners in their area of specialism. 

Other responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the operational and strategic development of the EEF
  • Undertake other duties which may from time to time be requested by the Chief Executive, Deputy Chief Executive or Head of Dissemination and Impact

Person specification

You will be joining a small and focused team driven by an ambition to deliver real improvements in educational attainment, especially for disadvantaged pupils. You will have established networks within your area of specialism, and be committed to making a difference.

To apply for this position, you must be able to demonstrate:

  • The ability and credibility to act as an effective ambassador for the EEF.
  • Be able to articulate clearly the value and the role of evidence in driving improvements in pupil attainment.
  • Teaching experience in English state schools in the last five years.
  • A track record of delivering CPD and developing and supporting staff across a school, group of schools or organisation.
  • A good understanding of adult facilitation and the evidence around effective professional development.
  • Strong relationship management and communication skills.
  • An understanding of the causes and consequences of the attainment gap in English schools.
  • An understanding of the cultures of both practice and research in your area of specialism.
  • An ability to develop high quality resources that support teachers to enact and implement effective practices in the classroom and across school/s.
  • Have a broad knowledge of research findings and appropriate methodology in their area of specialism.
  • An entrepreneurial approach and an ability to adapt to a small, ambitious organisation.
  • Resourcefulness and high energy.
  • An ability to work well in a team and offer a hands-on approach.
  • A commitment to the aims of the EEF.
  • A willingness to travel to London regularly and to occasionally stay overnight.
  • Understanding of the education landscape in your area of specialism. 


  • The ability to write engaging content that mediates research evidence in practice in your area of specialism.
  • An understanding of how to communicate and disseminate research findings for to teachers.
  • Experience of working with national networks in your area of specialism.
  • Experience of quality assuring the delivery of CPD and training.
  • Experience or understanding of leading training, coaching and providing support to school leaders and teachers.
